A Night of Firsts

Last night was a landmark night in the Worthington household! It actually started with Wade's evening nap (we are still figuring out our napping schedule). He went to sleep well, but then woke up about 30-45 minutes later, as has been his usual practice recently. At this point, he typically fidgets and fusses until we pick him up and soothe him back to sleep. Well, we decided it was time for Wade to learn to soothe himself, so for the first time...we let him cry. It actually wasn't as hard as I thought it would be (for mama, that is) because he would cry for a little bit and then he'd quiet down. This pattern repeated for about 30 minutes, at which point, he finally stayed quiet and slept peacefully. He seemed so grown up just sleeping all by himself in his big-boy crib. He did so well in it that we will probably not go back to the bassinett next to our bed. Mama is a bit sad about this milestone, but I know it is a good thing for Wade to learn to sleep by himself in his room.

Would you believe that the night just got better from here? I put him down "for the night" at 11 pm, and I could hardly believe it when I woke up (from a bad dream where Batman's Joker was about to select me to torture! Weird, I know.) to Wade's hunger crys at 4:30 am!!! Dear readers (I think there are about three of you :), do you know why this was so wonderful? For the first time, Wade slept uninterrupted for 5 1/2 hours! I actually woke up earlier at 2:30 am worried and wondering why he was not waking up to eat. Speaking of eating, our boy has clearly been doing some recently. He had his four week check-up yesterday, and he weighed in at 10 lbs 11 oz, putting him in the 75th percentile for weight! He gained 3 lbs in one month! Watch out, husky clothes here we come!

We also started our cloth diapers for the first time last night. While Wade is still small and pooping and peeing every other minute, we are using prefolds with covers. I forsee myself doing more blogging about cloth diapers in the future, as it is a new endeavor for us with a bit of a learning curve. It was very fun putting this cute little number on him:

  1. Hi Anne! Great to hear Wade is growing and sleeping in his big boy bed. I love the blog and thank you for sharing your stories. This mama-to-be needs all the advice she can get :)

  3. Hi Anne! I'm loving your blog so I can keep up with you guys and your new handsome fella. I too love the Bradley birthing method, our Ergo (i LOVE our Ergo) and cloth diapers. Ellie is still in prefolds and easy covers. I actually think they're easier because every time I use disposables I end up with leaks.

Our son was born last Friday (March 6), so I am back into the ranks of the night wakers. I am so happy for that 5 hour stretch. It seems like if you can sleep 4 hours straight you can start feeling normal again.

In your spare time (what's that again?), or while you nurse you can check us out at www.fareaststreet.com, although updates might be a little sporadic for awhile here.
